Hi VCKC Kayakers and Canoeists,

We're going to restart our paddling season with a morning trip to Thetis Lake.  We plan to explore nearly every nook and cranny of the shoreline.  About 7km of paddling. We'll likely throw in a couple of island visits as well.  We might even entertain the possibility to practice a kayak wet exit in the shallows or capsize a canoe (at the end, optional for everyone).  If anyone is interested I can demonstrate the kayak Covid rescue that I recently learned.

Max of 12 boats.  We will have two groups of 6

Skill Level Beginner
Participants should have a minimum certification (or equiv skills) of:

Paddle Canada Kayak Basic

or

RCABC Canoe Lakewater 1

Logistics

Our aim is to have everyone on the water by 10:00 AM.  For that to happen we would like everyone to arrive at Thetis Lake by 9:30 AM

If you will be borrowing a club boat please meet at the VCKC clubhouse at 8:30am.  It will really, really help if we can cartop all the boats.  We have a club trailer, but I'd rather not use it.   If you are bringing your own boat you can meet us at Thetis Lake at 9:30 am.  I anticipate the lower parking lot will be full and busy (the "dog beach") so we're not even going to waste time looking.  Instead, drive past the parking lots on the left and drive to the turn-around at the top of the small hill.  At the turnaround you'll see a picnic bench and a convenient place to unload.  Unload and then park your vehicle in one of the large parking lots. We'll walk the boats to the main beach from there.

What To Bring

Safety Gear:  Boats must carry all the Transport Canada required safety equipment.

  • PDF for each person (worn)
  • whistle
  • bailing device e.g. pump or bailer
  • throw rope

Snack
:
I think this will be about a 2-hour paddle, so we'll be finished before lunch.  But, it would be a good idea to bring a snack to eat en-route.

Be Covid safe
Participants are asked to bring a face mask and hand sanitizer in case either is required. In order to be eligible to participate you will have attended an orientation session on the Covid protocols and signed a waiver.

If you need to borrow a club boat
send an email request to:

kayakbooking@vckc.ca
or
canoebooking@vckc.ca

Any member who uses a club boat will be required to return to the club to ensure that the boat and all accessories are properly cleaned.
